Esther Mulaney – My Mom’s the Coolest!
My Mom is the greatest! Shown here with my granddaughter and their matching blue eyes, my mom reminds me often that family is important. We live in the county where her great grandparent’s homesteaded in 1916, currently across the street from where her parents moved in 1946 when they moved into town from the farm for her to attend school. My grandfather operated an auto shop in the driveway about a half block south.
When she graduated in 1954, she married my Dad who was just home from Korea. She ended up staying home with her folks while he went back to Korea and lost their first child in April of 1955.
When Mom was a little girl, she worked in Grandad’s shop after school and on weekends to help him out. He’d had a heart attack on the farm, and her help in the shop kept groceries on the table. She was only nine years old. Later during Junior High years her mom had cancer and she helped care for her. She was later cured of cancer and lived a long and happy life.
Her parents lived across the street from her until their deaths, in 1971 (Dad) and 1983 (Mom). She cared for them in their later years and loved the time they spent together.
When my Dad abandoned her in May of 2003, just three days before their 49th Anniversary, Mom was shattered, but she kept going. Almost a year later, she returned to work full time doing janitorial care for a local department store and has continued to work full time at her job. On rare occasions when she takes time off, she loves to travel and meet the friends she’s met online. Last summer, her travels took her by AmTrak to Iowa near where her parents grew up.
Currently, she’s learning the ropes in a new job, still working as much as 35 hours a week, and keeping up with kids 50 years younger than she is. She maintains the family home and has done such things as roofing, building fence, planting and trimming trees, and other major home maintenance and care even during this past year. She never misses an opportunity to care for and love her grandchildren (Tara Mulaney, Michael & Amy Mulaney, Skyler Mulaney, Brenna Kelley, Tatia Verhoeff, Sean Verhoeff, and Kenton Verhoeff)or great grandchildren (TJ, Tika, Chelle, and Lizzie).
Her interests include entrepreneurial business, a gardening website, genology and reflexology. Not only is she the coolest woman on the planet, she’s the coolest mom too!
